ADX Florence is the only federal supermax prison in the United States. Thirty-seven acres carved into the side of a mountain in Colorado. Open since 1994. Zero escapes in over thirty years. A former warden described it in six words: a tomb, a mausoleum. A former inmate called it the death penalty on a payment plan. This documentary tells the story of the building itself — not one inmate, not one crime. How two officer murders at Marion in 1983 created the blueprint. How the architecture was designed so inmates cannot determine their own location inside the facility. How fourteen hundred remote-controlled steel doors, laser grids, pressure pads, and a subterranean hallway ensure that no inmate ever sees the layout of the complex. How meals arrive through a slot, recreation happens alone in a concrete cage, and one fifteen-minute phone call per month is the only voice from outside. How a man inside cut off both his earlobes, chewed through a finger, and smashed his head open during a psychotic break — and how the building kept functioning exactly as designed. We also cover the 2025 transfer of commuted death row inmates to ADX, the federal judge who blocked further transfers after finding the process may have been predetermined, and the question the building forces everyone to answer: does the crime justify the concrete, or does the concrete become something the crime no longer explains?
