WW2 Helmets Restored: Burned Relic and a Tricolor Decal!
In this video, I restore and preserve two WW2 German helmets, each with its own unique history and challenges. The first helmet was found near Skrunda, in the Courland Pocket, in a burned-out bunker. It was covered with thick layers of rust and buildup. After cleaning off the debris, I discovered it was heavily corroded and full of holes. Despite its poor condition, I decided to give it a chance and soaked it in an oxalic acid solution. While waiting, I received a second helmet, found near Tukums and purchased from a friend. Unfortunately, this helmet had been partially cleaned with a grinder, leaving it damaged and poorly restored. Since the first helmet was in such bad shape, I decided to clean and soak the second one alongside it. After the acid bath and cleaning, the results were surprising. The first helmet, an M35 model, revealed faint remains of a decal—a rare discovery considering its poor condition. The second helmet, also an M35, had a better-preserved tricolor decal on the opposite side, along with remnants of its original paint. To preserve them, I used WD-40 spray as a quick and easy alternative to wax. While WD-40 isn’t as effective for long-term preservation, it’s a practical option for helmets in such poor condition. In the end, the first helmet was beyond saving and ended up in the trash. However, the second helmet, despite its flaws, had enough original paint and a visible decal to earn a place in my collection. Join me in this journey of restoration, surprises, and decision-making as I work with these pieces of history!
