(Non) Disney: "Stand Out"
I OWN NOTHING! All respective rights go to their respective parties, which is not me. I think for the most part, but not all of course, they go to Disney. I really love this song and I wanted to use it in a video that focused on a few animated characters that I have in my collection that stand out from their surroundings in some way. Specifically, the way in which they stand out attributes positively to their overall character. For further explanation, I'm going to list the characters below and describe how I feel they stand out.... Ariel - She first goes from being a mermaid that wants to be a part of the human world, making her stand out from her family and community in Atlantis. She then transitions into the human world environment, where the combination of being mute and oblivious to a lot of the human customs definitely makes her stand out. Rapunzel - Well, the approximately 70 feet of hair is quite the obvious answer. But like Ariel, she also stands out by making that transition into a community where she doesn't know all the norms. Tarzan - With Tarzan, he never quite has a place where he doesn't stand out, which is part of what makes his character so great. Growing up with the gorillas, he constantly appeared different and had various unique abilities as a human. Yet even assimilated into the human world, he didn't fit in, because of the traits he picked up with the gorillas. Tarzan is never 100% accepted in either side of his background, which is what makes him so interesting. Kim Possible - She's one of the characters that is able to stand out while still blending in. You could say she lives a normal teenage suburban girl life; homework, cheer practice, worrying about boys. Yet, at the same exact time, she travels the world, uses all this amazing technology, and goes around saving lives on a daily basis as a teen hero. Toph - Being blind is only a basic difference that makes her stand out. I think the fact that she is specifically so unique comes from her being a blind bender. Even better, a blind earthbender. We never meet another blind bender in the ATLA series. Also, the fact that she learns to bend metal makes her stand out quite a bit as a master of earthbending. And of course, her attitude has quite a lot of presence. Mulan - Again, this is a character where her ability to stand out goes along with her need to blend in. Mulan's dedication and love for her father motivates her to abandon her life as a young chinese girl and impersonate a male soldier in the army. That sacrifice is highly commendable in the first place, but then she eventually excels in the army. Both her attitude and achievements make her characterization one that stands out. Aang - It goes without saying that Aang stands out primarily from just being the Avatar, a job given to only one person in the world at a time. But even from the other past Avatars, Aang stands out to me. I think his reluctance to be the Avatar is a huge part of what shapes it, because it's backed by the whole idea from Shakespeare about greatness being thrust upon us, and how some of the best heroes thrive under that unwanted pressure. Belle - She definitely stands out because of her beauty in her town. But even in the opening song of Beauty and the Beast ("Belle"), the townspeople go on to explain how she is an odd and funny girl, always reading a book or daydreaming. This goes to show just how much Belle differs from the norm in her home environment, for many more reasons than her looks. Quasimodo - Throughout The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Quasimodo's differences in his appearance are what keeps him locked in the bell tower. But throughout the film, what's great about his character is that he starts to learn that what makes him different and stand out is not necessarily what makes a monster. Kiki - Kiki's stand out quality comes about strongest after she leaves her home to move to a new city. It's explained in the film that there is usually only one witch per town, so that in itself will make her stand out from everyone else. Also in the film, I just see Kiki portrayed as a more mature girl than most of the other kids in her age group; her main concern is making a living for herself. She even stands out by the way she dresses, which is much different than the other girls in the town. Overall, I just love Kiki's character for all the reasons she is so unique. Esmeralda - Being a gypsy alone doesn't make Esmeralda stand out to me so much. It's more so her frame of mind, then fact that she was the only one to stand up for Quasimodo during the feast of fools when he was tied down and people were taunting him. That kind of act really defines her character, and her willingness to put herself out there for what she believes is right. So yes, that is just a little overview of some of my thoughts on these characters. There are plenty more that stand out in their own way, but these were the ones I chose for this particular video. Enjoy! :)
