Stay tuned! ;-) Information about the concentration camp: The Theresienstadt concentration camp, also known as Theresienstadt Camp or Theresienstadt Ghetto, was established by the German occupiers in Terezín (German: Theresienstadt, in the occupied territory of Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic). After the occupation of Czechoslovakia, the Nazis turned Terezín/Theresienstadt into a concentration camp in what they called the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. In 1940, a Gestapo prison was initially established in the Small Fortress; in November 1941, a collection and transit camp was set up in the garrison town, primarily for the Jewish population of the occupied country. Following the Wannsee Conference, from 1942 onward, elderly Jews or those considered prominent from Germany and other occupied European countries were also deported to the camp. In Nazi propaganda within the German Reich, Theresienstadt was glorified as an "old people's ghetto" and, for a brief period, presented to various foreign visitors as a supposed "model Jewish settlement." The occupancy of the "old people's ghetto" fluctuated considerably: Between autumn 1942 and the end of 1943, it often housed well over 40,000 people.[1] The "Theresienstadt Concentration Camp" fulfilled four functions: It was a Gestapo prison, a transit camp on the way to the major extermination camps; it served the purpose of exterminating people within the framework of Nazi policy toward Jews; and—at times—it served Nazi propaganda as a supposed "old people's ghetto."
