Savour the Serenity of the English Countryside on a Frosty Spring Morning | COTSWOLDS
Tucked quietly into the gentle folds of the North Cotswolds, the small village of Upper Swell offers a peaceful glimpse into a slower, more timeless England. Just a short distance from the bustling market town of Stow-on-the-Wold, Upper Swell feels worlds apart — a place where the soft murmur of the countryside replaces the noise of modern life. With roots stretching back many centuries, Upper Swell is believed to have originated as a small Saxon settlement. Its name, “Swell,” is thought to derive from Old English, possibly meaning a “spring” or “rising ground,” a fitting description for a village gently elevated above the surrounding landscape. Like many Cotswold settlements, it would have grown quietly through the medieval period, shaped by agriculture and the prosperity of the wool trade that once defined this region. At the heart of the village stands the beautiful Church of St Mary, Upper Swell, a building that has watched over the community for centuries. With its mellow Cotswold stone and simple, enduring presence, it reflects the quiet continuity of village life — where generations have gathered, marked time, and passed stories onward. Today, Upper Swell remains a small and largely residential village, untouched by heavy tourism and full of understated charm. Honey-coloured stone cottages line its quiet lanes, and the surrounding fields and rolling hills offer a landscape that feels both expansive and intimate at once. It’s a place where the rhythm of life is set not by urgency, but by the seasons. Though peaceful and tucked away, Upper Swell benefits from its close proximity to Stow-on-the-Wold, where traditional inns, independent shops, and a long history of market trading continue to thrive. This balance of seclusion and accessibility is part of what makes the village so quietly special. Whether you’re simply passing through or pausing for a while, Upper Swell invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and take in the quiet beauty of the Cotswolds — a place where time seems to soften, and the world feels just a little more still. This video features the new style of intro, whereby I gather footage after the main walk from in and around the area where the walk took place. Next week's video opens with a gorgeous aerial shot and then on to the slider footage. As time goes by and the more I practice, the more creative I will become with this new format, as well as making gentle refinements in post-production. Please note that the main/primary walks after the intro remain unchanged. Thanks for walking with me. #cotswolds #englishcountryside
