It is based on the Kubernetes container orchestration system and provides additional features and tools to simplify the deployment, management, and scaling of containerized applications. The architecture of the OpenShift Container Platform can be summarized as follows: Master Nodes: The master nodes are responsible for managing the overall cluster and coordinating the activities of the worker nodes. They run various components, including the API server, controller manager, scheduler, and etcd (a distributed key-value store for cluster configuration data). etcd: It is a distributed key-value store used for storing cluster configuration data, such as cluster state, resource definitions, and other metadata. API Server: The API server acts as the central control point for interacting with the OpenShift cluster. It handles requests from clients, manages the cluster's state, and performs authentication and authorization. Controller Manager: The controller manager is responsible for maintaining the desired state of the cluster by managing various controllers. It monitors the cluster, detects changes, and takes necessary actions to ensure that the desired state is achieved. Scheduler: The scheduler is responsible for assigning pods (groups of containers) to available worker nodes based on resource requirements, placement constraints, and other policies. Worker Nodes: Worker nodes are the machines where containerized applications run. They host the pods and provide resources for running containers. Each worker node runs the OpenShift Node service, which includes components like the kubelet (responsible for managing pods and containers), container runtime (such as Docker or CRI-O), and the OpenShift SDN (Software-Defined Networking) components for networking. OpenShift SDN: OpenShift SDN provides networking capabilities within the cluster. It assigns IP addresses to pods, handles pod-to-pod communication, and enforces network policies. Registry: The OpenShift Container Platform includes an integrated container registry where container images are stored and made available for deployment within the cluster. Persistent Storage: OpenShift supports various options for persistent storage, allowing applications to store data beyond the lifespan of individual containers. This includes options like networked storage systems, cloud-based storage, or on-premises storage solutions. Overall, the architecture of OpenShift Container Platform is designed to provide a scalable, resilient, and highly available environment for running containerized applications. It leverages the power of Kubernetes while adding additional features and tools to simplify the management and operations of containerized workloads. OpenShift Container Platform is a platform for developing and running containerized applications. It is designed to allow applications and the data centers that support them to expand from just a few machines and applications to thousands of machines that serve millions of clients. With its foundation in Kubernetes, OpenShift Container Platform incorporates the same technology that serves as the engine for massive telecommunications, streaming video, gaming, banking, and other applications. Its implementation in open Red Hat technologies lets you extend your containerized applications beyond a single cloud to on-premise and multi-cloud environments.
