He saved a four-year-old child from a malignant brain tumor that all other doctors had given up on, and he was the first in the world to successfully separate conjoined twins. Despite his difficult childhood, his mother's encouragement helped him become a remarkable doctor. Born in the slums, his parents divorced when he was eight, and he spent his days wandering around the neighborhood, getting into fights with gangs. He was bullied at school because he was black, and his grades were consistently at the bottom. When a reporter asked him, “What made you who you are today?” after such a difficult and unfortunate childhood, he answered without hesitation, “It’s my mother, Shawnya Carson. Even when I was always last in class and bullied for being black, my mother always said, ‘Ben, you can do it if you put your mind to it. Just try. If you work hard, there’s nothing you can’t do,’” offering her positive and hopeful encouragement. Pascal, the brilliant French mathematician, physicist, and theologian, once said, “Warm words don’t cost much, but they accomplish much.” John Calvin also said, “All our words should be filled with kindness and grace. To achieve this, we must use words that are beneficial and kind to others.” In this way, a single word has a power far beyond our imagination. 1. The Function of Words Words have the power to determine the direction of life. James 3:2 states, "We all stumble in many ways. If anyone never stumbles in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle his whole body as well." It's like the bit in a horse's mouth that determines its direction. The rudder beneath the ship is submerged and invisible. However, the ship's direction is determined by the direction of the rudder. Our tongue is invisible. It resides in our mouths. Yet, it moves and guides us in the direction of our words. George Muller, who received answers to prayers over 50,000 times, is the "father of orphans" who raised countless orphans. However, as a youth, he was a neighborhood vagrant and gangster. He stole from his father, lied, and spent time with friends visiting entertainment establishments and police stations as if they were his own home, ultimately ending up in prison. However, the turning point in his life was a local pastor's words: "Muller, bad habits don't break overnight. But God never abandons those He has chosen. He doesn't abandon those with bad habits. So don't be discouraged, take courage." In his book "The Three Golden Gates," Day C. Shepherd writes, "Before speaking, always pass through three golden gates: first, is it true? second, is it truly necessary? and third, is it kind? If you feel confident that you have passed these three golden gates before speaking, speak boldly without worrying about the consequences." Words are like a rudder that steers a large ship tossed by storms, and they determine the direction of our lives. Therefore, we must always think carefully and choose our words carefully.
