The Regent of Kapuas Hulu, Fransiskus Diaan, attended the inauguration and dedication of St. Anthony of Padua Mendalam Church in North Putussibau, Tuesday (18/10/2022). The inauguration was attended by Archbishop Agustinus Agus of Pontianak; Bishop Samuel Oton Sidin of Sintang; Speaker of the West Kalimantan Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) Mikael Kebing; and its member, Yosef Alexander. Markus Jaraan, Chairman of the St. Anthony of Padua Mendalam Church Development Committee, explained that this parish church falls within the Diocese of Sintang. He said that Catholicism initially arrived in Mendalam in 1120 by Dutch missionaries serving from Semitau. "The Catholic population has continued to grow, and today there are 2,000 members, consisting of 10 parishes and 5 parish churches," he explained. The old St. Anthony of Padua Mendalam Church is 50 years old, and its building materials are brittle. Therefore, the congregation formed a committee and undertook the construction of this church. "In 2016, with assistance from the West Kalimantan Provincial Government, the foundation stone was laid in 2017. Then, the construction continued until 2022 with assistance from the Kapuas Hulu Regency Government, donors, and the parish. The total construction cost was almost IDR 8 billion," he emphasized. Bishop Samuel of Sintang said that building faith is not easy. However, Catholics must sincerely believe in God to become a strong, devout people. He also reminded Catholics to cultivate true tolerance. "I hope the congregation here will be truly helped in practicing their faith because they have a strong community of faith and a beautiful church," he emphasized. Upon hearing the committee's report, the Regent said, it was clear that the church's construction had been a long and arduous process, taking five to six years to achieve its grandeur. "8 billion in aid, almost 80 percent from the West Kalimantan Provincial Government, with the rest from the district, donors, and the congregation," he said. As a resident of Mendalam, Fransiskus Diaan expressed his pride that the Mendalam church building was completed and looks magnificent. The church's construction also demonstrates the synergy of all parties. Joint support can produce extraordinary results. "With this church, we hope the congregation will increase their devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ," he said. The Regent also added that he had inaugurated a parish church in Sejiram. The West Kalimantan Provincial Government also provided Rp 6 billion in assistance. The total construction budget was also nearly the same, at Rp 8 billion. "I urge the local Catholic community to maintain the church that has been built," he concluded. The Head of the West Kalimantan Food Crops and Horticulture Service, Florentinus Anum, said he was present on behalf of the Governor of West Kalimantan. He stated that the completion of the St. Anthony of Padua Church in Mendalam was worthy of collective gratitude. Building such a church certainly requires considerable sacrifice, time, and expense. "Physical buildings are not the most important thing; the most important thing is the mental development of Catholics in West Kalimantan and the Diocese of Sintang, so they understand God's teachings in their entirety," he said. Religious development is a shared responsibility. Therefore, he urged all parties to address differences wisely. All parties must be tolerant and forgive each other for their mistakes and errors.
