Corylus avellana MEDUSA® 'JWW9' / Dwarf Contorted Hazelnut Corylus avellana MEDUSA® 'JWW9' is a monoecious fruit-bearing shrub (male and female fruits on the same plant). The male catkins appear on the plant in summer and open in February-March, forming long, drooping yellow catkins. The female catkins bloom from March to April. They are bud-shaped, 6 to 8 mm long, with bright red stigmas at the tip. Its deciduous foliage is bright green. The fruits are achenes, which are called hazelnuts. They are yellow-green, then brownish-purple when ripe. Growing in clusters of 1 to 4, they measure 2 cm in diameter. Harvesting takes place in late August or early September. Very slow-growing, it can reach 1.5m x 1m after 10 years, for a final mature height of 2m x 1.5m. It is a very hardy shrub. An excellent plant for cutting original and decorative branches for floral arrangements. General Knowledge: Corylus avellana MEDUSA® 'JWW9' was developed by Jan-Willem WEZELENBURG (NL). It is an improvement on the 'Contorta' variety. For comparison, it is more branched, more compact, each branch is extremely twisted, and it is less brittle.
