Let's summarize the key points about complex ion formation and redissolution! ✅When a ligand of a complex ion is replaced with another ligand, a new complex ion is created. This reaction is called a complex ion formation reaction. ✅In complex ion formation reactions, ligands are generally replaced two at a time. ✅However, there are complex ion formation reactions in which ligands are not replaced two at a time. Be especially careful when adding ammonia. When ammonia is added, some ligands ionize to release hydroxide ions, so the first complex ion formation reaction occurs in which the original ligands are replaced with hydroxide ions.
