But every one of them was about to die — and when the smoke cleared over Tumbleton, what was left of an age that took a century to build could be counted on one hand. Three of the four survivors — Sheepstealer, Silverwing, and the Cannibal — had gone wild, and a wild dragon is a dead end for a dynasty. That left one young, tame dragon still bonded to a living Targaryen: Morning, hatched in a cold mountain castle by Rhaena Targaryen, the forgotten twin who spent her whole life as the girl without a dragon. On paper, the least impressive dragon of the entire Dance. In truth, the one fragile thread holding the whole future of her kind. This is the story of how the age of dragons really ended — not in a final battle between giants, but quietly, in the dark, with a hatchling named for the dawn and a girl almost no one was watching. We follow Rhaena and Baela, the split between the show and the books, the birth of Morning in the Vale, and the tragedy of Aegon III the Dragonbane, the boy-king who feared dragons after watching his mother devoured alive — and under whose reign the last dragon in the world died in the Dragonpit in the year 153. ⚠️ Spoiler note: the final act goes past where House of the Dragon has taken the show, into what the books lay out for after the Dance.
