This song has been handed down throughout the Ryukyu and Amami Islands as a song sung for "Unarigami-Shinkou," or "the faith of female sister deities," who reigned as spiritual guardians in the ancient Ryukyu Islands. This song allegorically portrays these sister deities in the form of a white heron praying for their brothers’ safe voyage as well as describes plover birds on the beach crying from recalling their mother's face after being reluctantly separated from their parents.
