Billy Mitchell Predicted Pearl Harbor Seventeen Years Early. The Army Court-Martialed Him for It.

In 1924, Brigadier General Billy Mitchell submitted a classified report to the War Department predicting a Japanese aerial attack on Pearl Harbor at 7:30 AM. He named the targets. He named the sequence. He predicted the fall of the Philippines and Guam. Seventeen years later, it all came true — almost exactly as he described it. But Mitchell never saw it. Three years earlier, he had proved that aircraft could sink battleships by sending the "unsinkable" German dreadnought Ostfriesland to the bottom in 22 minutes. The Navy's response was not to adapt. It was to bury his findings, exile him to Texas, and when he refused to stop talking, court-martial him. The men who testified in his defense — Hap Arnold, Carl Spaatz, Ira Eaker — became the architects of Allied air victory in World War II. Mitchell died in 1936. His conviction has never been overturned. This is the story of the man who was right about everything and punished for all of it.
