The Supreme Court has advocated for lenient punishments for drug-related offenses. This applies to cases other than drug trafficking. More than a third of those currently serving sentences under the so-called "people's article" are under 30 years old. Over the past two decades, legislation has, on the contrary, been changing, increasing penalties for drug trafficking. Judges believe that the approach to sentencing should be more balanced and individualized. There are approximately 700 inmates in the Mozhaisk Women's Colony, and two-thirds of them are serving sentences for drug-related offenses.
