Day 40: Jamaica Farewell on banjolele - Harry Belafonte // #100DaysofUkuleleSongs

I research every song before I record it - as a songwriter, I like having some context for where/when the song was written and who wrote it. I learned that Jamaica Farewell actually comes from a genre of Jamaican folk music called mento. Mento is related to Trinidadian calypso but is traditionally played with folk instruments - banjo, acoustic guitar, hand percussion, fiddle, fife. Kind of like creole bluegrass reggae. So cool! So naturally, that helped me select the banjolele for this tune - I was inclined to choose it before my research, and thanks to the internet for confirming my intuition!
