I Built a Working DRS Mechanism Using Only a 3D Printer
In this video, I design and 3D print a working Drag Reduction System (DRS) inspired by the Porsche 992 GT3 RS, entirely at home. 🔧 3D Files & Mechanical Examples: 👉 https://www.fatlipcollective.com.au 🖨️ HeyGears Resin Printer & Materials: 👉 https://www.heygears.com/ ______________________________________________________________________________________________ How to design 3D printable objects is a question I get asked a lot, and this project is one of the most ambitious automotive DIY projects and 3D printed car accessories I’ve worked on so far. As far as vehicle build projects go, this custom DRS mechanism pushes what’s practical in a home garage. In the video, I walk through the mechanical linkage design, explain the compromises involved, and show how a functional system can still be achieved using 3D printed mechanisms and off-the-shelf components. The Drag Reduction System concept has always intrigued me — So with the popularity of the 992 GT3RS what better time to design a DRS-inspired system from scratch at home. However, it raises a lot of questions: How do the mechanisms work? How do you package it? And how do you design it so it can actually be 3D printed? This video documents the approach I took, including the design process, materials selection, actuator choices, and what I’ve got planned for the future. If you’ve got questions, suggestions, or ideas for future versions, let me know — I’m always happy to talk engineering and projects. Thanks for watching! ✌ _______________________________________________________________________________________________ 0:00 – Designing a Custom DRS Mechanism From Scratch 2:00 – Mechanical Linkages for Automotive DRS 3:30 – Designing a 5-Bar Mechanism with Mechanical Advantage 4:30 – Assembling the 3D-Printed DRS Mechanism 5:00 – Materials Selection & Design for Manufacture 7:00 – Micro Linear Actuator Selection 8:00 – Hydro-Electric Actuators for Automotive Use 9:00 – How Double-Acting Cylinders & DCVs Work 9:40 – 3D Printing a Double-Acting Cylinder 10:55 – HeyGears Reflex 2 First Look 14:07 – Ultra-Clear Transparent Resin Prints 15:27 – 3D Printed Directional Control Valve & Cylinder 16:25 – Future Plans for the DRS Design #3DPrinting #MechanicalEngineering #AutomotiveEngineering #CADDesign #CustomCars
