This report covers the 8th hearing (June 9, 2026) at the Tokyo District Court of the third selective surname lawsuit for married couples, "Towards a Society Where Separate Surnames are Also Possible!", filed on March 8, 2024. In this lawsuit, 12 men and women in legal marriages or common-law marriages have filed a lawsuit in Tokyo and Sapporo, seeking confirmation that they can marry while retaining their pre-marriage surnames and demanding 6 million yen in damages from the government. They argue that the provisions of the Civil Code and Family Register Law that mandate married couples to share the same surname violate the Constitution.
