Dug out from a single piece of log for the top sound board and also the frame, this is known as the Zheng Wa Zheng (整挖筝) whereas, another type of Wazheng is called Ban Wa Zheng (半挖筝) which only features the top sound board being a single dug out piece of wood. The Zhuque brand only features the Zheng Wa Zheng, which typically costs 3 times more than Ban Wa Zheng to make. About Kaoban Zheng (烤板筝): Kaoban means the sound board of the Guzheng is heat treated into the curved shape from a plank of paulownia wood. This method of making Guzheng is popular in from the late 20th century to current modern day due to the penetrative sound, clear highs and clean tones that the Guzhengs tend to sound. It excels in bringing out the emotions in music pieces and is also very good at showcasing the technical abilities of the player, which is why majority of competition competitors chooses to play the Dunhuang Kaoban Guzheng in large scale competitions.
