Florence was born into an aristocratic family and received an excellent education. Florence decided to become a nurse and traveled to several countries to study nursing. She trained in nursing at the Institute of Protestant Deaconesses, after which she became the director of a hospital for disabled women in London. When the Crimean War began, Florence took on the task of organizing medical care for wounded soldiers. She introduced sanitation and discipline to medical personnel, and the care methods she developed formed the foundation of nursing.
