My Favourite Place on Earth | Indonesia’s Underwater Eden | Raja Ampat, Misool
Misool, in the far south of Raja Ampat, is a place where marine ecosystems function at full capacity—unfished, unmanaged by outsiders, and rich with life in every direction. This episode documents our time in one of the most intact reef systems on Earth. We arrive by traditional Phinisi liveaboard, sailing through a labyrinth of limestone islands into the heart of the Misool Marine Reserve, a community-run no-take zone that has transformed local waters into a biological stronghold. Our dives begin at Pele, where massive sea fans, soft corals, and towering reef structures attract dense fish schools and predator activity. At Magic Mountain, an isolated seamount rising from the deep, we witness one of the most intense gatherings of marine life anywhere in Indonesia—reef sharks, manta rays, giant groupers, and swirling schools of barracuda and batfish all converging in clear open water. Sites like Nudi Rock and Boo Windows showcase Misool’s famous soft coral gardens, home to a kaleidoscope of reef life and constant movement. These reefs are pulsing with energy—from clouds of anthias to surprise sightings of camouflaged octopus and unusual reef dwellers hiding in plain sight. But Misool is more than just diving. We explore Balbulol, a maze of karst limestone islands and inland lagoons only accessible by paddleboard or small boat. At Farondi, we swim through underwater caves where filtered light reveals cave walls covered in glowing clams, sponges, and delicate reef invertebrates. One of the most surreal moments of the journey is a visit to Jellyfish Lake—a remote, landlocked marine lake where golden jellyfish drift through the still water. Isolated for thousands of years, this ecosystem has evolved in near silence, and swimming among its delicate inhabitants is like stepping into a forgotten world. Throughout the expedition, we reflect on the fragility and resilience of coral reef systems. Misool’s success is a testament to local stewardship and what’s possible when nature is given space to recover. 🎥 Shot over multiple weeks in cinematic 4K, this is not just a dive trip—it’s a detailed portrait of one of Earth’s last underwater strongholds. This is Episode 2 in a long-form series exploring the Coral Triangle, from the southern edge of West Papua, to the remote northern capes of Raja Ampat and then onto the West Coast of Halmahera Island. ⸻ Featured Locations: • Pele Reef • Magic Mountain (Shadow Reef) • Nudi Rock • Boo Windows • Balbulol Lagoons • Farondi Cave • Jellyfish Lake • Ranger Station Beach ⸻ #Misool #RajaAmpat #MarineSanctuary #CoralReefs #OceanExpedition #BiodiversityHotspot #LiveaboardAdventure #UnderwaterIndonesia #CoralTriangle #DivingDocumentary
