How to make a Sound on the Shakuhachi Bamboo Flute.
Here is a tip for the beginner on how to make a sound on the shakuhachi. Just make gentle smile (I like to think of it as Buddha's smile) and start by saying the letter "P". However, the lips, or, embouchure should not open up all the way, just the initial, tiny opening at the beginning of the letter "P". Position your lips at top of the flute and exhale through the that embouchure and you should get a sound. This usually takes a minute or two. Remember, playing the shakuhachi is a relaxing experience. No need to blow hard. Just inhale fully and exhale your stress away! Enjoy, Perry.
