The new HB-E220 series diesel railcars have been operating for some time now on the non-electrified section of the Hachiko Line, between Komagawa, Kuragano, and Takasaki. The railcars being replaced are the KiHa 110 series 200 series, previously operated by the Gunma Rail Center. The retired railcars were towed to the Koriyama General Rail Center by the E493 series, a service-use electric train (Super Kumoya) belonging to the Oku Rail Center, for scrapping and disposal. However, recently there has been no news of such activity, and many railcars remain in service. Then, in a move never seen before, the railcars were towed by the GV-E197 service-use diesel railcar and headed towards Niigata on the Joetsu Line, the opposite direction from the usual route to Koriyama.
