I am Jerusalem - King Baldwin IV
King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem (1161–1185), often called the “Leper King,” became ruler of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem at just 13 years old. Soon after his accession, he was diagnosed with leprosy, a disease that gradually robbed him of physical strength and ultimately led to his early death. Despite his illness, Baldwin proved to be a remarkably capable and strategic ruler. He worked to stabilize a fragile kingdom surrounded by powerful enemies and internal political divisions among the Crusader nobility. His most famous achievement came in 1177 at the Battle of Montgisard, where he led a Crusader force to a surprising and decisive victory against Saladin, earning him lasting military fame. As his condition worsened, Baldwin increasingly relied on regents and advisors, yet he continued to assert authority and maintain unity within the kingdom for as long as possible. His reign is often remembered as a tragic contrast between a deteriorating body and a resilient will, embodying both the vulnerability and determination of the Crusader states in the Holy Land.
