Olelo Hawaii in Kahana & Hauula: Stories with Keao NeSmith – Part 2

Aloha hou mai! This week, we’re picking up right where we left off with my good friend, Dr. Keao NeSmith. In this episode, Keao invites us into the heart of Kahana Valley, sharing stories of his childhood, where he and his cousins played in the lush landscape. He also takes us to Hauula, where he immersed himself in the Hawaiian language while living with his grandmother, a native speaker who shaped much of his learning. To deepen the connection, Keao reads a heartfelt letter from her, written in Hawaiian. So sit back, listen closely, and enjoy this deep and insightful conversation. For you olelo Hawaii teachers and students out there, I hope you will make use of this in your learning of the Hawaiian language. Keao was one of the few fortunate people of his generation that heard and learned Hawaiian from his grandparents generation who were native speakers. As we continue to learn and teach, we must take it upon ourselves to assimilate the speech of our kupuna who were native speakers. ➡️ Subscribe and stay tuned for more videos Special thanks to Larry Kimura, Puakea Nogelmeier and Ka Leo Hawaii, and Kani Aina for the interview recording of Hattie Au and Annie Kauhane (family to Keao).
