Traveling abroad in your 50s is about finally doing what you want to do, so this time I'll be sharing my experiences from my trip to Amsterdam and The Hague in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is easily accessible, with direct flights from Doha on Qatar Airways. Why not experience the beautiful art and culinary culture of the locals? From Amsterdam Airport, I took the train to the city center. My first impression was the beautiful canals that define the landscape of the old town. This harsh reclaimed land, where a quarter of the country lies underwater, has a history of fighting against the water, using windmills and canals. As a result, the fertile polders have led to the development of a wonderful food culture, including delicious Gouda cheese. I thoroughly enjoyed this elegant adult trip through the Netherlands. The most enjoyable part of traveling is experiencing the local food culture. I sourced fresh mussels and other North Sea seafood, herring (known as salted fatty herring), and mushrooms at the market, and cooked simple yet profound "core local flavors." We chose a hotel with a kitchen, prioritized fresh ingredients, and savored Dutch culinary culture along with crisp Dutch beer and wine. At the Mauritshuis in The Hague, we were deeply moved by the artistic power emanating from Vermeer's masterpiece, "Girl with a Pearl Earring." We also encountered Rembrandt's masterpiece, "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp." It was a truly wonderful experience to be able to view in person a masterpiece that any doctor or medical professional would have seen at least once. Beautiful scenery, profound art, and delicious local cuisine. This adult trip to the Netherlands was packed with elements to satisfy your intellectual curiosity, so be sure to watch until the end!
