Macbeth: Gender - A Beyond Theme Guide

“You would be so much more the man...” Sam from Beyond explores the significance of gender roles in Macbeth for GCSE English Literature. Subscribe for updates:    / @beyondrevision   Sam talks students through key moments in Shakespeare's classic tragedy. Focussing on the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, gender roles in Macbeth are often subverted and both characters assert their dominance in the play through different means, be that through brute force or manipulation. The characters in Macbeth all display their power in different ways. We see Macbeth himself using violence, yet Lady Macbeth uses words and manipulation. Traditional gender roles are disrupted in the play. We see Lady Macbeth wishing she had more masculine traits, seeing her femininity as a barrier, preventing her from taking what she wants. In contrast, we see Macduff demonstrating a more sensitive side that is usually avoided when representing traditional masculinity.
