Guitar Tone Tuesday: Ep 136 - Guild Starfire V; Not Gretsch, Not Gibson, But The Best Of Both Worlds!? Visually Impaired since birth, Lucas Haneman uses his ears and hands to guide him when choosing gear, writing songs and recording parts. Will you agree with his assessment? The Guild Starfire-V has been in production since the 1960s', and though it has features on the surface that are close to Gibson and Gretsch guitars, it has a voice to call its own. Check out this episode of GTT to hear for yourself how this special thin-line guitar with its unique Little Bucker pickups (in production since 1962), and Guild Vibrato (Guilds answer to the Bigsby) add up to the Starfire sound, utilized by artists such as Jerry Garcia, Tom Fogerty, Robben Ford and Buddy Guy. Now, thanks to Guild's Newark St-Collection of electric guitar designs originally issued in the 50s' and 60s', you can pick up one of these beauties for a decent price. The Starfire V features semi-hollow all mahogany construction with a centre block, an arched top and back, dual F wholes on its 16 inch lower bout, white body binding, 2 of Guilds LB-1 little Bucker pickups, 2 volumes, 2 tones, 1 master volume, and a 3 way pickup switch, a 3 piece mahogany/maple/mahogany neck with a rosewood fret-board, and a unique 9 1/2 inch radius. The Starfire V also features a Tune-O-Matic vibrato bridge with a rosewood base, Grover machine heads, and ships with a wonderful plush hard shell case.
