Steve Reich – Music for 18 Musicians (Live in Japan, 2008)
This performance is one of my favorites and particularly valuable because it documents one of the last occasions Reich personally participated in Music for 18 Musicians (well into his seventies), alongside Ensemble Modern and Synergy Vocals in an extremely clean and rigorous reading of his work, released in 1978 by ECM Records. Indeed, although many later performances are available online, not all include Reich's direct participation. This Japanese version is a reinterpretation in his full maturity, demonstrating how Music for 18 Musicians has now become a repertoire classic, performable with chamber-music rigor. The dynamics here appear more sculpted, the transitions sharper. The German Ensemble Modern has an absolute precision that lends crystalline articulation to the performance, while the British Synergy Vocals reveal superior timbral control even compared to the original performance. The marimbas and xylophones also enter with a sharper attack, providing broader dynamics. In Music for 18 Musicians, constant pulsation is a key element of Reich's minimalism: the interlocking pattern is based on rhythmic interplay between percussion instruments and keyboards, with microvariations determined by minimal shifts in accents and rhythmic figures. The chord changes are punctuated by the performers' breathing, primarily in the clarinets and voices. The work, in fact, is based on a cycle of 11 chords, presented at the beginning and reprised at the end, divided into sections called "Pulses" and "Sections" from I to XI, built on each of the 11 chords. The transitions are extremely fluid, without sharp breaks, making the overall listening experience dynamic and imaginative. Masterpiece! Capolavoro!
