DOOM The Dark Ages - Ultra-Nightmare Full Playthrough
DOOM: The Dark Ages - Ultra Nightmare Full Playthrough Completion w/ Ultra Nightmare Graphic Settings 4K 60FPS / Full Game Completion All Cutscenes on Hardest Difficulty Ultra Nightmare. Just a long video of my first completion of the ultra-nightmare campaign in DOOM The Dark Ages. This is the highest difficulty of the game, and if you wipe at any point you lose the save and have to start from the beginning. However, I decided to opt for the regular Ultra-Nightmare completion, as the 100% would take a lot more planning and routing than I have time for at the moment. So for now I'm happy to have this completed. In terms of difficulty, I'd say this is significantly easier than DOOM Eternal. That one gave me a lot of trouble, whereas in this it's much safer to handle everything. Even on my first nightmare playthrough I seldom had any deaths, only a few extra lives here and there. Especially in the later game once you have most of your upgrades, chaining everything together makes it much harder to die, and combined with the Ravager constant health regen you can just tear through everything without much threat. Most of the run made use of Impaler and Ravager as a result, those were the two weapons I was comfortable with from my first playthrough. There's probably better options, but I just stuck with what I knew. Additionally, the ability to use the shield throw to lock down any otherwise annoying enemies is a huge help, and any big targets can be fought in melee range making most of their attacks non-effective. There's also what I'll refer to as a "one-shot safeguard", where fatal damage puts you at 5hp instead of outright killing you. This allows for a lot of leeway in most encounters or poor play, and unless you're completely out of position and have a terrible turn of events, it'll save you 99% of the time. This came in handy a good few times in the run, and saved me overall when I was playing bad. If I recall correctly it was also a thing in DOOM Eternal, but with the ability to block in this it felt more forgiving. The hardest levels were the first 6-7, and even on the very first level I had a death at the end. That's because you don't have a lot of your upgrades unlocked, and going from a late-game setup to basically nothing, you tend to take things for granted. The worst enemies were by far the shield soldiers that constantly fire at you. The Cacodemons were also another that I didn't know the best to handle unless you spawn trapped them with the shield, and two nearly killed me in this. The ghost enemy was also quite annoying to deal with. The tyrants and cosmic barons were my favourite enemies to fight, and they're especially easy to handle with their melee combos. Lastly, I didn't do this all in one sitting, so this a segmented run. There was no way I was going to stay playing 7 hours at once, so I took a break every couple of levels to balance it out. It gave me a chance to take a breather and double-check anything I was worried about in upcoming levels, or practice what I needed to. I also had to restart 3 different levels due to bugs: once due to a checkpoint not updating, and twice due to the shield just completely stopping to function (like when it happened in late Chapter 10). So I understand this doesn't make it a "true" ultra-nightmare, but I'm not too fussed about that either. I play the DOOM games because I find them fun rather than the explicit challenge or rules, and the main purpose of this is to have a full playthrough of the game up on the channel at the highest difficulty, with all cutscenes included. I'm sure there's plenty of better and dedicated DOOM players who will have full ultra-nightmare runs done in the one sitting, so feel free to watch those instead if you prefer. Overall, I had a brilliant time with the game. While I would've been happy with just DOOM Eternal 2.0, I'm glad they changed it up. It won't be for everyone, but I personally enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the DLCs.
