LISTENING NOTES Chains & Whips – Clipse, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell The XM5 has a bit of a void in the soundstage, which isn't great. The vocals are noticeably recessed. The XM6 has a fuller, more expansive soundstage. The vocals are also more prominent. ⸻ reincarnated – Kendrick Lamar On the XM5, the vocals and piano are a bit recessed. Actually, the bass being more prominent pushes the piano into the background, but the overall performance is very enjoyable. The instrument tracking is noticeably better on the XM6. There's much more detail on the beat. The bass is more controlled and in the right place. Instead of standing out, it contributes to the track. The soundstage is also significantly wider and more three-dimensional. ⸻ That’s All She Wrote – T.I. The XM5's bass is a bit boomy. The XM6 has a wider soundstage. The vocals aren't very prominently featured, but they're slightly more prominent. The bass is also more refined. ⸻ Fade – Kanye West The XM5 has a slight sibilance in the vocals, but this is most likely an artist's preference. The treble is borderline bright. The bass decay is a bit excessive. The XM6 also has vocal sibilance due to preference, and the treble extends nicely, with more brilliance. The bass also dampens more controllably. ⸻ Portland – Drake, Quavo, Travis Scott The XM5's treble is again borderline bright. The bass is a bit boomy, but it adds to the enjoyment. The XM6 has more spacious treble and better extension. The bass is harder and the soundstage is wider. It's not as boomy as the XM5, but it maintains its firmness. ⸻ 9 – Drake On the XM5, the vocals are noticeably recessed, the soundstage is narrow, and the bass is harsher. On the XM6, the soundstage is much wider, and the level of detail is higher. The mids are prominent, and the bass doesn't overpower them. The bass is still harsh, but more controlled. ⸻ Nonstop – Drake On the XM5, there's not much detail in the beat, the soundstage is narrow, but the vocals aren't recessed. The bass is very sweet and full. On the XM6, the soundstage is wider. The bass is more refined but still harsh. Vocal positioning is similar. ⸻ Global – Lil Baby The XM5 plays much weaker and more hollow. This is the track where the difference between the two headphones is clearest. The soundstage is quite narrow. On the XM6, the hi-hat and upper frequency layers are more prominent than the bass. The vocals and these upper layers carry the track, while the bass is more noticeable, except for the final part. ⸻ The Return – Logic On the XM5, the soundstage is narrow. Details other than the vocals and bass are lost, and the vocals are also recessed. The sound on the XM6 is much wider and more three-dimensional. The vocals are prominent and the level of detail is quite high. The synthesizer is very easy to follow. ⸻ HOTEL LOBBY (Unc & Phew) – Quavo, Takeoff The XM5's bass is boomy but very enjoyable and full. The vocals aren't recessed either. The XM6's bass is more refined, but the overall details are similar. The XM5 is preferred for this track. ⸻ Crocodile Tearz – J. Cole The XM5's bass is harsher, and the vocals are strangely closer than on the XM6. The bass hits really well. The XM6 has a wider and more refined soundstage, but it wasn't very suitable for this track. The XM5 is preferred for this track. ⸻ Trap Tears (feat. Key!) – Raury, Key! The XM5's vocals are recessed, the soundstage is narrower, but it still plays well. The bass is especially prominent on the sub-bass side. The string instrument is centered on the stage. On the XM6, the stage is much more detailed and accurately positioned. There's a more bare presentation, and the string instrument spreads to the left. The XM6 is clearly better in this track. ⸻ range brothers – Baby Keem, Kendrick Lamar On the XM5, the vocals are noticeably recessed, but the bass is very strong and enjoyable. The bass layering literally carries the track. I clearly choose the XM5 in this track. I couldn't write a significant plus or minus for the XM6. ⸻ Dark Fantasy – Kanye West The XM5 plays more narrowly, and the vocals are recessed.
