Is God’s Offer too Good to Be True? Leviticus 25:1-7, Luke 4:18-19; Leviticus 25:7-20, John 8:31-36; Leviticus 25:23-28, Declaration of Independence In the Bible, the Year of Jubilee was a time when debts were forgiven, slaves were freed, and ancestral lands were returned. Early in his ministry, Jesus proclaimed Himself the fulfillment of this ancient tradition, declaring a permanent era of spiritual freedom and God’s favor; in New Testament terms: grace. Grace cannot be begged, borrowed, or stolen. We can’t earn it, we don’t deserve it, and we can’t concoct it. Paul explains this crucial element of the Christian faith by asserting that we are saved by grace through faith, which he says is a gift of God. There's only one catch. Like any other gift, God’s grace can only be ours if we reach out and take it. That being the case, maybe our willingness to receive it is grace, too. KEY QUESTION: Does God expect more from us than He is willing to give Himself? What does faith have to do with the Year of Jubilee? Does God issue terms for surrender? Is my life my problem, or God’s? How does freedom bring revival? How is the Year of Jubilee a good example of the Golden Rule?
