Diagnosing and Grading of #Cataract using both Slit Lamp and OCT. | OOLS | Optom. J. Jothi Balaji
OOLS - Online Optom Learning Series - Session 93 (09th December 2020) Here we bring you the 93rd session of our online learning series which was live on 09th December 2020 at 07:00pm IST. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ All about this Session: Introduction (00:00) Mr. Jothi Balaji, a practicing optometrist, and researcher begin with a series of questions that help the audience to understand their level of knowledge in cataract grading. He introduces the need to learn about cataract grading by sharing that it has been the most common cause of preventable blindness globally for the past few decades. Mr. Balaji says that most individuals suffer through cataracts in their lives since it is an age-related condition. He explains that most cataracts can be classified into three primary types depending on the area where the cataract starts to develop. (8:55) 1. Nuclear sclerosis – opacification occurs in the nucleus of the crystalline lens. 2. Cortical spokes cataract – opacification occurs in the cortex capsule 3. Posterior subcapsular cataract – opacification develops in the posterior capsule. He explains the need to grade cataracts as the patients with functional vision loss associated with cataracts must undergo surgery. We learn about the three commonly slit lamp illumination techniques used to grade cataracts. (13:05) 1. Diffuse illumination(13:40) 2. Optic section (15:44) 3. Retro-illumination (17:06) Mr. Jothi Balaji explains that when grading a cataract, LOCS 3 is the most commonly used method. Grading for different cataract types 1. Nuclear sclerosis (20:28) 2. Cortical spokes cataract (23:00) 3. Posterior subcapsular cataract (24:35) We learn about the Posterior polar cataract in detail Prevalence and risks(27:00) Clinical presentation (30:30) Clinical diagnosis (32:50) Classification and grading (33:37) Schroeder posterior polar cataract grading in children(34:45) Lastly, Mr. Balaji explains how anterior segment OCT is being used to diagnose and manage posterior polar cataracts. The session ends with an engaging question-and-answer session with the live audience. Question and Answer Segment (39:12) References: Papers: Posterior Polar Cataract Lee MW, Lee YC. Jothi Balaji for this wonderful session where he explained how to diagnose and grade, the commonest eye condition 'Cataract'. We thank all the participants who attended the lecture and asked a few important questions so that we learn and go home with a great message.
