Title: Norman McLaren and Experimental Animation Description: Norman McLaren (1914-1987) was an animator born in Stirling, Scotland, though his name is inextricably linked to the National Film Board of Canada, where he worked for over 45 years and produced 60 short films. He made numerous abstract films where musicality predominated (Begone Dull Care, 1949; Le Merle, 1958; Spheres, 1969). For McLaren, animation is always a kind of dance, and what happens between the frames is more important than what is in each frame. He explored and improved techniques such as direct animation on celluloid (Boogie Doodle, 1941; Blinkity Blank, 1955), under-camera painting (La poulette grise, 1947), synthetic sound (Synchromy, 1971), and made extensive use of the optical printer to generate many visual canon effects (Pas de Deux, 1968; Canon, 1964). He won the Oscar in 1952 for his short film Neighbours, made using pixilation. Lorenzo Hernández, MC. (2020).
