Morate's Double Murder in Cuenca: The Murders of Marina and Laura "If it goes as planned, you won't catch me." That's what Sergio Morate told one of the police officers as soon as he landed in Madrid after being arrested in Romania for the murders in Cuenca of his ex-girlfriend Marina and her friend Laura. Five years later, investigators reconstruct the double murder for EFE. In just seven days, the police, with a bit of luck and mistakes by the detainee, thwarted the plans of so many killers who think they're smarter than they actually are. "This looks very bad." Sergio Morate, 32, and ex-boyfriend of Marina Okaryska, 24, of Ukrainian origin, was the prime suspect almost from that August 6, 2015, when the mothers of the young women and Sergio's own mother went to the Cuenca police station. The police began their investigation and soon contacted Madrid. "This looks very bad," they were told that Thursday. By the weekend, a team of agents from the Homicide Group of the Central Specialized and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV) was already in Cuenca. They began working with their colleagues to reconstruct the hours leading up to the three disappearances. Morate's record was not encouraging, as seven years earlier he had kidnapped and extorted another girl, who reported him. He spent 18 months in prison for these crimes, where he met two inmates who also became pieces of the puzzle in his crimes. He also had a record for child pornography. Obsessed with Marina, she wasn't afraid of him. By August 6, with three missing persons reported, the police had a good number of leads. Marina and Sergio had been dating for several years, but in January she had broken up with him and gone to Ukraine. He didn't hesitate to follow her, driving thousands of kilometers. He returned to her without her agreeing to see him. During Holy Week, Marina went back to Cuenca. He showed up at Madrid's Barajas airport even though she "didn't want to see him at all." She was going to spend a few days with her parents before returning to Ukraine, although she came back for a vacation in the summer. Sergio hadn't accepted the end of the relationship, and he began to suspect a gender-based crime, especially after hearing rumors that Marina had gotten married in her country. In the days leading up to the murder, he talked about extradition agreements and crimes like that of José Bretón. Marina had arranged to meet Sergio to collect her belongings. The police also know that Marina had arranged to meet Sergio to collect her things from the apartment they had shared, but her belongings were still in the apartment, which was searched a few hours later. "There's no sign of violence at the home, but a bag containing plastic cable ties and some rope was found," two of the homicide detectives who led the investigation told EFE. They relied heavily on the families, especially Sergio's mother, who cooperated with the officers who immediately sensed that the outcome would be very difficult for the parents. Both detectives paint a picture of victim and perpetrator. Marina wasn't afraid of Sergio; she was a "determined, strong-willed" girl, and proof of this is that she didn't give him any chance when she went to Ukraine or when she returned to Cuenca. He was "a bully, very persistent, obsessed with her." He hadn't accepted the end of the relationship and was very upset by the rumor that Marina had gotten married in Ukraine. But then Laura appeared… Homicide specialists believe that Marina called Laura, an old friend, to accompany her to the apartment to collect her belongings with the sole purpose of getting rid of her ex quickly and putting a definitive end to the relationship without having to put up with him. Sergio tried to convince Marina to come another day, but ultimately they both went up to the apartment. What happened in the apartment between the three of them has not been clarified, although the autopsies did determine that Marina received a severe blow to the head and was asphyxiated with a cable tie, and that Sergio strangled Laura with his hands. While Morate, sentenced to 48 years in prison, remained silent during the trial, one of the officers overheard many of the detainee's explanations upon his arrival in Spain, where he confessed that his plan was failing because of Laura, since he had everything prepared to bury Marina alone and create an alibi for himself. Before his arrest, the police had already gathered much more evidence. From a phone that wasn't his, he contacted a cousin, sending her a message asking her to delete everything on her social media accounts and promising to explain "everything" later. They also knew he was traveling by car. #documentary #crime #spain
