North Vietnam's MiG Pilots Never Knew the Phantoms Were Waiting

On January 2, 1967, Colonel Robin Olds launched Operation Bolo - a brilliantly deceptive mission where F-4 Phantoms disguised themselves as bomb-laden F-105 Thunderchiefs to lure North Vietnam's MiG-21 interceptors into a trap over Hanoi. By mimicking the speed, altitude, formation, and electronic jamming signature of vulnerable strike packages, Olds exploited the rigid pattern-recognition system that North Vietnamese ground controllers had perfected over 18 months of Rolling Thunder. In just 12 minutes, seven MiG-21s were destroyed with zero American losses - eliminating nearly half of the VPAF's operational MiG-21 fleet.
