Normandy Brittany Day 3: Beuvron en Auge – Vierville-sur-Mer NKC route 'Wild coast, wild past': day 5-8 Parking D-Day Museum Vierville-sur-Mer (France 14710), free My walk to the bakery today yielded nothing. The bakery was closed. We decided to leave early and score a baguette on the way. That didn't work until we reached Pegasus Bridge. The ancient Pegasus that was fought for during the liberation is in a museum. Traffic is now racing over a replica. Next to the bridge is café Gondree, the first house to be liberated during D-Day. It's already clear. Today's theme is: D-Day. In Ouistreham we found an open bakery. We had a lovely breakfast in the morning sun on the beach. In Courseulles-sur-Mer we took a short walk through the dunes and on the beach, Juno beach. Juno beach is the beach where D-Day started with the landing of the Canadians. There are still many bunkers in the dunes. There are also a number of memorials and monuments such as tanks and cannons. The Canadian landing museum was well worth a look. The last film with apparently real images was especially impressive. The route continued to Arromanches-les-Bains. The parking lot at the viewpoint cost €10. We didn't feel like paying that for a photo and drove on. We found a nice spot in Longues sur Mer. We grabbed the bikes and drove past the huge German bunkers. Some still had the cannon inside. We cycled a small circle of 14 km. For a while we thought about staying the night here, but we decided to visit the Cimetiere Americain. Unfortunately it closed at 5pm. Then eat something first. That didn't work out yet. All the restaurants still seemed closed. Finally we found a snack bar at Vierville-sur-Mer on Omaha Beach. This is a long way past the American cemetery. We spent the night in the parking lot at the D-Day museum and tomorrow we drive back to the Cimetiere Americain.
