After the shot, is the follow-through just for flair, or is it part of the technique? A. In most cases, it’s not just flair. Onkkakji refers to allowing the drawing hand to move fully backward after release. Old texts state the hand must move back; otherwise Toechok occurs — this happens when, before reaching Manjak (full draw), the bowstring pulls the hand forward, reducing power. When shooting a Gaip (an arrow released while the string is still being drawn), the hand naturally moves backward due to the string’s force. This natural motion is what we call Onkkakji. Q. What’s the difference between Gojachegi and Khatra? A. Gojachegi is a relatively modern term that refers to striking the Goja (upper part of the bow above the grip) firmly after pushing the bow. Khatra is a more natural motion — pushing the bow smoothly in a single, continuous movement. Some say Gojachegi is useful in field situations, but for modern sport archery or at distances like 145 m, it may be less effective.
