Our shipbuilding industry, having formed a united team, suffered a defeat, and a German company, a NATO ally of Canada, was selected as the preferred bidder. Having missed out on the Canadian submarine project, the Korean shipbuilding industry is now setting its sights on the U.S. naval vessel market, which is estimated to be worth up to 1,600 trillion won. The starting point was U.S. President Trump's request to build U.S. warships during his meeting with President Lee Jae-myung at the G7 summit last month. Of course it is possible, and I said I would do my best..."] Recently, it has been revealed that the U.S. government has assessed the actual capabilities of the South Korean shipbuilding industry. The U.S. Department of Defense and the Navy have each sent information requests regarding combat ships and refueling ships to domestic shipbuilders, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. This is the first time the U.S. side has assessed the capabilities of South Korean shipyards since discussions on the Korea-U.S. shipbuilding cooperation 'MASGA' began in earnest. The budget to be invested in this is estimated to be up to 1,600 trillion won.
