Conferencia: "Arte, cultura y persuasión en tiempos de Juan de Pacheco" por Maria Teresa Chicote

If we consider Juan Pacheco (1419-1474), the first Marquis of Villena, the adage "arms and letters" takes on a different nuance than it did for the Marquis of Santillana. In Pacheco's case, letters were the weapons his opponents used to discredit him and leave us with a negative image of this nobleman. But Pacheco responded to the propaganda with a long series of cultural promotions aimed at convincing his contemporaries that his position as King Henry IV's favorite was legitimate and necessary. Few figures from 15th-century Castile are as compelling as Íñigo López de Mendoza, the Marquis of Santillana (1398-1458). A cultured and powerful nobleman, he distinguished himself both through his literary pursuits—he was a prominent poet and literary historian and amassed an exceptional library—and through his active promotion of the arts. Beyond exploring these facets of his personality and the mark they left on the Mendoza family's memory, the series will also seek to uncover the common interests shared by other prominent Hispanic and European nobles. "Arms and Letters in the Time of the Marquis of Santillana" November 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, 2022 Sponsored by the Friends of the Prado Museum Foundation More information about this series: https://www.museodelprado.es/recurso/...
