The slats of the blind can be made of (roll-formed) aluminum, wood, plastic, but also glass or (stainless) steel. The slats can be fixed, pivoting, or arranged in other ways so that they can be moved. A sliding blind is called a Venetian blind or a louvre blind. In France, the term "jalousie" (feminine; French for "jealousy," also known as "bar-operated shutter") originally referred to window grilles designed to allow a view to the outside while simultaneously preventing a view into the interior. The name "jalousie" derives from the fact that these grilles were modeled on oriental models from harems, where the master of the house jealously guarded the women's quarters from the outside world. Like these oriental grilles, the first blind inserts for European shutters were initially non-adjustable.
