While Laguna was labelled by the American press as 'unknown', he had been ranked the no.1 ranked bantamweight behind only the great champion Eder Jofre, and had knocked out former title challanger Eloy Sanchez. At featherweight he had lost only twice, both over ten rounds, one of them avenged by knockout, and one close and somewhat disputed to future champion and ATG Vicente Saldivar.
