Fine Antiques (decorative arts) Education: Exceptional French 19th century mahogany Console Table
A continued discussion of the difference between general "antiques," and usually much older, original works of decorative art. The console table is named after the architectural elements/consoles which support the weight of a building's cornice or balconies. These iconic french pieces were often ordered along with the interior architecture of their original setting, designed to harmonize with the walls between windows, the paneling and the trumeaux mirrors above them. This console is outstanding by virtue of its exceptional qualities: its scale, the amount of mahogany used, the precision of the execution, surprising but successful elements of decor (sculpted stripes and particularly lifelike sculpted rosettes), and finally the unusual sea green marble. This video also furthers the repertoire of "restoration period" furniture featured on the channel (the style corresponding chronologically with and named after the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in post Napoleonic France). I tend to feature French pieces here not only for my personal ties to the country but for France's leadership in the arts during the golden age of furniture and interior design.
