Leadership Rooted and Sustained in God This sermon begins with a foundational truth: leadership originates from God and is sustained through an abiding relationship with Him. A leader without mentors or accountability partners is only a matter of time away from collapse or failure. In the same way, a leader without God “who is the source and sustainer of all things” is equally headed toward failure. John 15:5 reminds us that Jesus is the vine, we are the branches, and God is the owner of the vineyard. All He requires of us is to abide in Him. Deuteronomy 28:1–2 teaches us that God does not call us to obey in vain. There is a promise attached to our obedience ‘the blessing of being lifted above all the nations of the earth’. As a leader, you are called to: 1. Harness, Develop, and Coordinate the Gifts Within Your Sphere You are called to identify, nurture, and deploy the gifts and talents God has placed in the people around you — in your life and ministry. This means recognising their strengths, building on them, and strategically deploying those strengths while helping to neutralise their weaknesses. (Mark 3:14) 2. Inspire and Influence This role calls for mentorship through excellent leadership and role modelling — living in such a way that people can see what you do and aspire to be like you. Influence is built by understanding and meeting the six core psychological needs of people: • Security: The ability to minimise and remove fear and worry. When you give people a pathway to financial, social, and spiritual security, they will give you their loyalty. • Variety: People have an innate need for different experiences. No single thing, no matter how good, is sufficient on its own to meet the full range of human needs. • Significance: People need to feel valued, recognised, and appreciated — for who they are and for the work they do. • Love and Acceptance: People give their loyalty where they are loved, socially accepted, respected, and celebrated. • Growth; As a leader, you are responsible for growing both yourself and the people God has placed in your life. People carry an expectation to grow. • Impact and Contribution: People need to feel that they are making an impact and that their contribution matters. Once people feel that they matter, they keep coming back. Key Words That Work Miracles for Leaders • "Please" — Small as it seems, this word moves mountains in favour of those who use it. • "Thank you" — Another simple phrase that wins hearts. • "I am sorry" — This sentence carries the power of healing. It lifts burdens from people's hearts. Saying sorry does not mean you were in the wrong; it means you are the one mature enough to understand. • "God bless you" — This phrase fortifies people's hearts and minds toward you. 3. Build Models and Systems Visionary leaders build models and systems that outlive them. If your absence leads to the collapse of your organisation, you are not a leader “you have become an idol”. Establishing clear processes, procedures, principles, values, and structures ensures fairness and consistency even when you are not present. As a leader, you are required to look beyond yourself. Take the example of the Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 2:2. Be blessed as you listen.
