Jaye’s Story: A Reason for Hope
"I've never really had a real reason to stop. Until I took a pregnancy test." - Jaye, a mom whose newborn son was a patient in the Dartmouth-Hitchcock NAS program. As opioid use in New Hampshire has skyrocketed, with heroin-related emergency room visits tripling in the state since 2013, the number of infants born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) has as also grown. By 2015, one in 10 newborns in the Upper Connecticut Valley region had been exposed to opioids in utero and many had NAS—moderate to severe symptoms of physical dependence at the time of delivery. This crisis led to the development and adoption of a new model of care at the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD) for newborns exposed to opioids before birth, a model that received national recognition in a journal article published in Pediatrics.
