Trump Pressures NATO Allies on Defense Spending During Turkey Summit

President Donald Trump arrived in Turkey for a NATO summit where defense spending, the war in Ukraine and America's role in the alliance are expected to dominate discussions. Before meetings with NATO leaders, Trump said he is considering authorizing the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey despite a federal law that has restricted the transfer since 2020. The president also renewed criticism that NATO allies are not contributing enough to collective defense and suggested the United States could reduce its military presence in Europe. The summit also comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeks additional Patriot missile systems to defend against Russian attacks.
