When the Hillman Avenger Tiger first broke cover on the 1973 Donegal Rally, the Rootes Group announced its arrival on the rally stages in a flash of bright colours, stripes and spoilers. The Avenger would only be the start of the story though. If the company wanted to challenge Ford for rally supremacy, it needed the Avenger to evolve into something even more fiery.
