The ACT Roadmap | Session 2 | Transforming Your Relationship with Your Thoughts
In Session 2 of The ACT Roadmap, we focus on transforming your relationship with your thoughts — not eliminating them, but learning how to hold them differently. Most of us assume that if a thought feels loud, urgent, or painful, we must obey it or get rid of it. In this video, I show why that assumption keeps us stuck. Using classic ACT exercises like “Don’t Think of a Chocolate Cake,” the Paper Exercise, and simple defusion practices, you’ll begin to see how language can hook you into struggle — and how you can step back and create space between you and your thoughts. You’ll learn that thoughts are not commands, predictions, or facts — they are events in your mind that you can notice, name, and let pass. This session is about loosening the grip of your mind so you can respond intentionally rather than react automatically. When you stop fighting your thoughts, you free up energy for what actually matters in your life. If you want to follow along with every session, you can download The ACT Roadmap (therapist and client versions) at: www.shaunhardie.com. The handout mirrors what I use in real therapy and includes space to track your defusion practices, key insights, and weekly reflections.
