Quem são os «outros» de quem tanto se fala? | Praça da Fundação

There is a country within a country where citizens live who are constantly named, but rarely heard. What reality do they live in, and what does it reveal about the society that observes them from a distance? In the book "Portuguese Gypsies, Five Centuries of Resistance," Ana Cristina Pereira rescues stories, memories, and encounters to dismantle centuries of prejudice surrounding Gypsy communities in Portugal. Between evictions, traditions, life trajectories, and struggles for recognition, a plural portrait emerges that challenges preconceived ideas and exposes persistent inequalities. Who are these people beyond the stereotypes? What tensions exist between culture, integration, and rights? And what do these stories say about all of us? A conversation with the author, with Sónia Matos, president of the Portuguese Gypsy Women's Association, and with historian Francisco Mangas. Moderated by Isabel Lucas. May 30, 2026
