History and Culture, episode of May 29, 2024 VENICE: Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, edited by Prof. Marco Zanetto, historian ----------------------- The Scuole were lay confraternities (the first workers' associations in Venice, a sort of early welfare organization), which chose a patron saint and were joined by middle-class citizens. Patricians joined only the Scuole Grandi. Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista is one of the oldest, established in 1261, and elevated to Grande status in 1467. ----------------------- Journalist Marisa Sottovia in the studio From Radio Gamma 5 Subscribe to the History and Culture Channel: https://bit.ly/36FY89L
