Where the Green Ants Dream Movie Extracts
North East Arnhem Land clan elders Mr R Marika and Mr W Marika (dec) from Yirrkala in the Werner Herzog movie, "Where Green Ants Dream" (brief extracts). A mining company begins exploration blasting and drilling in conflict with an Aboriginal group protecting their sacred sites, "the Green Ant Dreaming". Filmed in outback South Australian opal fields with a NE Arnhem Land clan. After unsuccessfully contesting the mining company in court under "the Land Rights Act", the Aborigines are given a Caribou aeroplane and commence to build an airstrip, more in the style of a New Guinea cargo cult. Blasting commences and stirs up the dreaming site with potential disastrous results. Some great acting by Bruce Spence, Norman Kaye, Ray Barrett and other Australian actors with Roy and Wandjuk Marika as the elders of their clan (both since deceased). Filmed in 1984. German Film Awards winner. Outstanding cinematography by Jorg Schmidt-Reitwein.
